Mertika Marble LTD was established in 1978, with a Subsidiary Company Kouros Ltd. in 1997. It owns two quarries, one is the “White Marble Panagias SA” quarry licensed in 1985, total area covered 500,000 square meters, and the other one is the “Imathia-Kastania” quarry licensed in 2008, total area covered 400,000 square meters with exclusiveness in Apollo marble. The quarries that belong to the Mertika Marble Group produce White and Semi White marble. They are located in Northern Greece, which is the most productive area in extraction of white marble worldwide. The Imathia-Kastania quarry produces the WHITE APOLLO MARBLE, which in terms of petrographic characteristics, purity, consistency, breakage, friction and resistance is one of the finest Greek marble comparable to the ancient Pentelic Stone. According to the IGME data the WHITE APOLLO MARBLE has the lowest rate of absorption-soak, great resistance to compression, tension and abrasion. These properties combined with the specific weight and the excellent aesthetic appearance of APOLLO MARBLE make it perfect for applications in architecture, interior design, design of furniture and artistic objects, as well as, for any indoor or outdoor usage that requires a material full of beauty, vitality and durability over time. The excavation of APOLLO WHITE MARBLE has started more than 50 years ago. The specific quarry belongs to the Mertika Marble Group since 2008 which has its exclusive exploitation. Today the excavation takes place in terrestrial mining marble, but in the near future it’s in our plans the creation of two underground marble (using the procedure of camper with poles).
The prediction for production for 2020 is 15,000 m3 yearly. This is a result of high experienced personnel, as well as the heavy equipment machinery that we use in order to ensure large land excavations. The fine quality deposits, as well as, the rich marble deposits, make the specific quarry exceptional. The quarry operates all year around with two shifts daily. We are very conscious of environmental pollution, minimizing water usage, protecting the flora and fauna, collecting and recycling the lubricants of the machinery, and definitely avoiding the use of explosives. Our main goal is our respect to the environment. The white marble that belongs to the Mertika Marble Group was created from the conversion of net Asbestolith poor in silicate. During the process of birth of the Apollo marble the foreign substances such as mineral impurities, clay, mud, sand, ferrous oxide, silicate and other chemical compounds didn’t exist as crystals or layers in the limestone of our quarry, in order with special conditions such as heat and pressure, to alleviate the purity and whiteness of our marble. Our pure white silicate free marble, a marble free of impurities produces the purest, brightest white marble. This desirable material was used by Greeks and Romans to produce classical figurative sculpture. The Greeks used it in the Venus de Milo and the famous Elgin Marbles decorating the Parthenon.
The mineral composition is Calcite 98%, Dolomite %, Quartz 1%, Bulk Specific Gravity 2720 kg/m3, Absorption rate 0,01Wf %, Compressive Strength 990 kg/cm2, Tensile and Bend strength 207kg/cm2, Abrasion strength 6,94 mm.
The company has a significant piece of the market in south western Greece and the Ionian islands, the eastern Aegean, the Cyclades and Crete, which has been active for years with excellent quality products at competitive prices. This fact has led to the development of serious expertise, a stable clientele for the company (fixed link customer – supplier) and loyal associates.
Our concept is to offer our customers the best white, beige, black, grey, beige, brownish colors, as well as, antique look stones which represent a great percentage of our sales in the market. All stones and marble can be processed in order to succeed the following results.
How marble is made
What has changed dramatically over the years is the type of machinery used in this age-old sequence. Three basic types of machines are involved in the fabrication process: saws, polishers, and routers.
